Organic Jowar (white millet) Crisps

“The Earth is what we all have in common.”
― Wendell Berry

How often do you find yourself itching for a snack, and reaching out to a packet of potato chips because that’s the easiest to find? While much has been written about balanced and wholesome meals, it seems that the snacks we gorge on in moments of hunger between meals escaped the notice of the diet gurus. A lot of our snacking is motivated by impulse and peer pressure, but a lot of it is also owing simply to justified hunger and craving for solid food between meals. Indian snacks that accompany your tea or coffee, or spice up your cocktail nights, are usually rich and oily. We looked for a snack that was healthy, but that would also entice with its taste and satisfy our craving for something crisp. We stumbled upon the idea of making organic Jowar crisps.  The healthy and fibrous Jowar (sorghum or white millet), we discovered, could take on a more interesting avatar than the usual Roti. Try this recipe of Jowar crisps for some guilt-free and well deserved snacking!

Organic Jowar / White millet Crisps
Makes 20-25 crisps

Organic Jowar Crisps

Ingredients:

  • Organic jowar (Sorghum) atta/ flour : 40 gms
  • Organic wheat bran – 10 gms
  • Organic black rice – 1 tbsp (pounded coarsely)
  • Organic whole pepper – 6 nos (pounded coarsely)
  • Organic oil – 1 tbsp
  • Water – 20 – 30 ml (just enough to knead the dough)

Add the above ingredients into a bowl and make a firm dough using water. This dough will not be very pliable but will be very coarse. Since this is an all organic and healthy recipe, we suggest you use unpolished rice like black or brown. It wont hurt to use normal rice too!

Once the dough is ready, make small balls – the size of a very tiny marble. Flatten it like a disc and then use your ring finger to make a depression/ dent in the centre. These should look like inverted flying saucers once done.

Pre- heat oven to 150 degrees for around 20 mins. Place the discs on a baking tray and bake till brown.

Note: It took close to 20 mins on our oven. The time could be more or less on your oven.

Tip: These organic jowar crisps can be served as finger food for a cocktail party and/or for an evening snack right after work. A nice thick raita or a garlic dip is a killer combo for dipping!

Lets eat organic and save the planet!
